WHY HAVE A DOULA?
The word doula is a Greek word meaning women’s servant. Women have been serving others in childbirth for many centuries and have proven that support has a positive impact on the labor process.
I am a professional, trained in childbirth, lactation, and postpartum care and recovery who will provide emotional, physical, and educational support to you during the weeks leading up to labor, during your labor and delivery, and during those first couple of weeks of your postpartum recovery. I strive to empower you to connect with and achieve your birth goals, and to ease into your new family setting.
Numerous studies have documented the benefits of having a doula present during labor. With the support of a doula, you are less likely to have pain relief medications administered and less likely to have a cesarean birth. Many have also reported having a more positive childbirth experience.
My role as your Birth doula is never to take the place of your partner in labor, but rather to complement and enhance their experience as well.
By having a doula as a part of your birth team, your partner is free to also enjoy the experience without the added pressure of trying to remember everything they learned in childbirth class! Rather, they can focus on being there emotionally as you need them and physically as well. I like to be a doula for you both as a team.
The presence of a doula can be beneficial no matter what type of birth you are planning. Most report needing fewer interventions when they have a doula.
My role as your Postpartum doula is to take the stress off of your recovery by assisting you and your family with day to day life as well as walking you all through the care and feeding of your newborn to bring you together during recovery. Families and couples report an easier transition into family life with the added support of a professional and knowledgeable postpartum doula.
Having a doula take the time to hear your needs and preferences allows you to gain trust and comfort to go through your birthing journey and your weeks after delivery with the support and focus you need.
I hope to be a part of your birth team and postpartum support system and look forward to my role as your doula.
